Three days around Preveza: What to Know Before You Go
Three days is enough to see the things worth seeing here without spending all of them in the car. This is how we would order them from a base at Chroneika — the ordering matters more than the list, because Nikopolis is unpleasant in an afternoon and Preveza is dead before nine in the evening.
Day one: settle in, then the old town
Arrive, shop in Preveza for the apartment — the supermarkets are four kilometres away and every apartment has a kitchen — then swim at Kalamitsi, three kilometres north and the closest organised beach. In the evening, drive back into Preveza for dinner in Seitan Pazar. Do not go before nine; tables that look empty at eight are full by half past nine, and the local speciality is the sardine, grilled and eaten with bread and ouzo rather than as a main course.
Day two: Nikopolis early, Monolithi after
Nikopolis first thing — nine kilometres north, and it has to be early because the site is open countryside with almost no shade. Start at the museum to get the layout, then the Byzantine walls, the odeon and the Roman theatre across the road. From there Monolithi is a short drive further north: twenty-two kilometres of sand backed by pine forest, so walk five minutes past the organised section and it empties out completely.
Day three: pick one — Lefkada or the Acheron
Both are full days and they do not combine. Lefkada is the only Ionian island you can drive to, over the floating bridge at Aktio, but the famous west-coast beaches are another hour of mountain road beyond it and the bridge opens on the hour for boats. The Acheron is the opposite kind of day: over an hour inland, and you spend it wading upstream through water that stays cold all summer. Take water shoes — the riverbed is rounded stone and slippery, and that matters more than anything else you pack.
Practical notes
- A car is close to essential for all three days. Public transport here is built around residents rather than visitors, and none of these are walkable from Chroneika.
- If you have a fourth day, spend it doing nothing at Alonaki or on the Chroneika shoreline. Not everything has to be a drive.
