Acheron River: What to Know Before You Go
The Acheron springs at Glyki, inland to the north. In Greek mythology this is the river the dead crossed into Hades, and the ancient Necromanteion — the oracle of the dead — sits near its lower course. In practice it is a day out: you wade upstream into the gorge through water that stays cold all summer.
What the day involves
From the springs at Glyki you can walk into the river itself — the water is knee to waist deep in the accessible stretch and genuinely cold. Rafting, kayaking and horse riding operators work the same stretch in summer. Allow a full day including the drive.
Practical notes
- Water shoes matter more than anything else you bring — the riverbed is rounded stone and slippery.
- It is an inland drive of well over an hour each way, so it is a day trip rather than an afternoon.
- Take a picnic from the apartment. Options at the springs are limited and seasonal.
